Eat Up! These NYC Hotel Restaurants Offer Deals on Meals During Winter Restaurant Week 2018

As NYC Winter Restaurant Week 2018 roars into town for a three week stint from January 22 to February 9, this seems a good time to pause and take a look at its history.

Dozens of cities, large and small, offer promotional prix-fixe meals once or twice a year, but until 1992 that wasn’t the case.

Yum!

Restaurant Week started small as a goodwill gesture to the 15,000 reporters in town to cover the 1992 Democratic National Convention. It ran for just four days and was limited to lunch, $19.92 for three courses at participating eateries. “Frankly, we thought it would be a short-term money loser but have long-term PR benefits for New York and the restaurant industry,”  Restaurant Week co-founder Tim Zagat of Zagat Restaurant Guides fame wrote in The Atlantic.

Instead, it grew and grew, to twice a year for two week stretches, and then to three weeks. And as Zagat points out, many restaurants extend their offers beyond, turning Restaurant Week into an unofficial Restaurant Month. What better way to fill tables and court new customers during the year’s slowest times?

With 376 participants, Winter Restaurant Week 2018 is big (four years ago there were 291). Hotel restaurants account for 44 of them, up from 30 in 2014. Prices are up, too, but it’s still a good deal: $29 for a three-course lunch, $42 for a three-course dinner.
