A Summer Ice Cream Treat To Scream For At The Pierre New York
What does summer taste like?
Ice cream is my favorite two word answer, especially when it’s in a cone. It seems Michael Mignano, Executive Pastry Chef at The Pierre New York, agrees.
In the spirit of long days, soaring temperatures and lazy afternoons (or memories of them), he’s concocted the summer’s cleverest pop-up dessert: four miniature hand-crafted cones filled with ice cream made from sun-season fruits — white peach raspberry, Alphonse mango, white chocolate strawberry, wild blueberry verbena.
With a nod to portion control, there’s just a dollop of each — enough to keep you smiling and bikini ready.
Appearances count, and Summer Ice Cream Flight is a looker. Perched on a china rectangle, the cones stand at attention in a lucite holder flanked by two tiny macarons and a petite dark chocolate pistachio parfait popsicle. Instagram bait, in other words.
Indeed, no sooner had the server set down flights for my companion and me than the two women having high tea at the next table leapt up with their phones, asking to take pictures. Snap, snap. They sat down, and the woman at the table next to them made her way over with the same request. “I do paintings of desserts,” she explained and whipping out her iPhone, showed us an ice cream homage to Wayne Thiebaud. Snap, snap, snap.
Our little cones were starting to melt so we dug in. Delicious, especially the blueberry. They were almost a meal. We saved the pistachio popsicles for last — dessert.
Summer Ice Cream Flight, $12, is served daily in The Pierre’s Two E bar from 3 p.m. to midnight through September 7.
The Pierre, 2 East 61st Street, 212 940-8113.
Sounds and looks delicious. Instagram bait, for sure.
