When “Happy Holidays” Is Just the Starter: Hotel Holiday Decor with an Added Message
Some of the most fetching hotel decorations in town come with messages that go beyond Happy Holidays and champion a good cause. Here’s a sampling.
Anna Sui, Nanette Lepore, Nicole Miller and YEOHLEE are a few of the 30 New York fashion designers who created one-of-a-kind decorations for two little trees in the lobby at The Carlton. Proceeds from sales of the one-of-a-kind baubles, priced at $30 each, go to Save the Garment Center, which promotes the New York clothing industry. For more on the ornaments visit www.madeinnycholiday.com. The rest of the lobby looks pretty terrific, too, dressed in classic garlands, wreaths and (faux) firs befitting a hotel built in 1905.
The eye-catching ornaments on the Sofitel New York‘s tower of a tree were hand-made by second and third grade students at St. Stephen of Hungary, a small Catholic school in Manhattan. As thanks, the hotel made a donation in support of the school’s French program on #GivingTuesday. Bonus: a pianist performs in the lobby most evenings so guests can admire the tree to music.
Uber-chef Michel Richard cooked up these jolly desserts on sale at Pomme Palais, the stylish grab-and-go that’s made a splash in the lobby at the newly redone New York Palace hotel. They’re made from crispy meringue with a sugar scarf and a marzipan and chocolate hat. Unlike Frosty, they won’t melt, but they’re available only until December 29. $2 of each $20 treat will be donated to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Hope for the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan is the theme of this pretty tree at The Peninsula New York. The hotel, which has a sister property in Manila, is donating $5 from every room to the Gawad Kalinga Community Development Fund to rebuild houses lost in the disaster. Proceeds from the tree’s Snowpage ornaments will also go to the fund.
Neat stuff and good causes. Thanks for scouting these.
