Holiday Eye Candy: The Sixth Annual Gingerbread Extravaganza Wafts Into Le Parker Meridien

Add edible art to the list of New York City products that won’t be outsourced this holiday season.

For the sixth year in a row, The Gingerbread Extravaganza outfits the atrium at Le Parker Meridien with a fleet of fragrant art-meets-cookie-dough sculptures encased in Plexiglas.

This year’s theme, Made in New York, is a reminder of how inimitable the city’s sights are, from King Kong and the Great White Way to Holly Golightly breakfasting at Tiffany’s, especially when rendered in gingerbread.

In a fresh take on home cooking each of the 10, look-but-don’t-bite New York-centric concoctions was designed by a New York City restaurant, bakery or caterer.

As always, you can vote for your favorite at $1 a throw at the hotel or online (5 votes for $5). One lucky voter scores five days at the balmy Parker Meridien Palm Springs. Proceeds go to City Harvest, a New York organization that collects unused food from hotels and restaurants and feeds the needy. A City Harvest truck even inspired a gingerbread creation.

A roomful of uber-gingerbread houses merits a trip to Le Parker Meridien. (For added synergy, fanciful gingerbread cookies dress up the hotel’s giant holiday tree.)

The Extravaganza will be on view through January 4, 2015.

I took in the gingerbread art at the Parker Meridien shortly before Christmas. Seeing them in person is surprisingly fun, and they’re so varied. It’s a real showcase of baking creativity and engineering.
