Overnight New York is the independent guide to New York City hotels with honest, unbiased reporting and no ties to the hotels we write about. We visit each hotel anonymously and always pay when we eat and stay. Think of Overnight New York as a best friend who susses out where you want to spend the night — and where you don’t — and tells you what’s new, what’s trending and where to meet for drinks after work, indulge in a romantic dinner or put up the in-laws.

So Long John Dory, Hello Milk Bar: April Bloomfield’s Stylish Oyster Bar at the Ace Hotel Will Close February 23
/in Hotel Food and Drink, News/by Terry TruccoWe don’t report every hotel restaurant opening and closing. But this week’s news that the John Dory Oyster Bar at the Ace Hotel would close on February 23 was noteworthy — and not just because we love their kedgeree.
This was our favorite restaurant at the Ace. Though it supposedly was designed as a tribute to New York’s oyster bar history, it reminded us of something out of London’s East End — or the raw bar at Bibendum. New York’s hotels seem especially merry and bright this holiday season. Even construction scaffolding is embellished. Maybe it’s the easy availability of LED lights. Or the primal urge to out-decorate the competition. Or perhaps it’s just a simple desire to drum up some cheer.
