Three NYC Hotels Where You Can Watch the Academy Awards

OscarWhen Hollywood’s luckiest lookers thank their lawyers, agents, stylists and Mom for their screen success this Sunday, where do you want to be? Sure, you can stay home with your TV and Twitter feed, but watching the festivities on a big screen at a hotel can be so much more fun.

We found three hotels in different parts of town that go all out for Oscar night.  The envelope, please!

Midtown

South Gate, the restaurant and bar at the Jumeirah Essex House, knows how to put on a big-event TV celebration. They projected the broadcasts of Super Bowl XLVI and last year’s Royal Wedding onto a wall of the restaurant. And they’re doing it again for the Oscars. Cheer your favorite winners with a festive Red Carpet (raspberry-infused Patron tequila, spiced elderflower liqueur, lime juice, rose wine) or Golden Passion (citrus vodka, cointreau, passion fruit puree, cranberry juice) concocted specially for Academy Awards night ($16). Or settle in for the evening with the three-course $59 prix fixe dinner (salmon and tuna tartar, braised short ribs and dry-aged sirloin and chocolate crunch cake).

Jumeirah Essex House, 160 Central Park South; 212 247-0300.

Times Square

The Yotel knows what people want. Forget the awards — they offer televised red carpet watching from 4 pm to 9 pm. Sip a $6 champagne cocktail and dig into the eye candy. Food service starts at 6 pm. If you’re bringing a small group, book a cabin with a TV — for free — for watching the parade of Pradas, Chanels and Louboutins.  Prefer an earlier start? An Oscar edition of the weekly Eat Yo Brunch Party starts at 11 am with DJ Shane Daddy and features Richard Sandoval’s unlimited small plates (halibut sliders, wagyu brisket benedict, falafel lettuce wrap)and free-flowing cocktails including the Bacon Bloody Mary and Sake Sangria ($35).

Yotel, 570 Tenth Avenue at 42nd Street; 646 449-7790.

Downtown

The Standard Grill at the Standard is one of New York’s best hotel brasseries. And name one other restaurant with 480,000 pennies blanketing the floor.  Watch the Oscars on TV screens set up throughout the Grill’s main dining room. It’s the usual Sunday night menu, but that’s just fine. The Sunday Special Fried Chicken is soaked overnight in buttermilk and Aleppo pepper, breaded in Pancko crumbs and twice fried. And as hotel owner Andre Balazs revealed this week in Bon Appetit magazine, the restaurant’s chickens are raised on his farm in Locusts-on-Hudson. “I’ve never tasted chicken like this,” he told the magazine. Imagine that.

The Standard, 848 Washington Street; 212 645-4646.
