We just received an intriguing online announcement. Hudson, the midtown west hotel with the chartreuse space capsule entry, is opening a new hotel in Brooklyn (in Bushwick, natch).

Billed as the first farm-to-factory hotel, Hudson Brooklyn promises “a new view on gluten” and offers reclaimed hay bedding, cold brew coffee imported daily from Japan and organic eggs from the rooftop coop. As hotels have edged into endeavors that have nothing to do with lodging – art galleries! screening rooms! bingo nights! – retail scores high as a splashy extracurricular effort.  With Barneys edging out Walgreens as a role model, it can be easier to find a one-of-a-kind necklace than a newspaper – remember those? – in the shop adjacent to the lobby.

This can be a good thing as the holidays move into full swing. We set out on an informal shopping spree, camera in hand, and came up with a sampling of items that would look good under a tree, from stocking stuffers to big ticket.

We’ve been noticing an abnormally high percentage of rangy, good-looking people around town. That means one thing – Fashion Week is back.  More than 200 designers unveil their creations during the Spring/Summer 2012 shows at the tents in Lincoln Center and a host of private venues through September 15.

What are New York’s fashion-forward hotels doing besides gleefully celebrating their full – or nearly full — houses? Hint: think “emerging designers ” – and fashion by association, that hint of glamour that rubs off on anyone around it.

A Chat With Travis Chamberlain, Director of Tennessee Williams’ “Green Eyes” at Hudson Hotel

It’s not news when a hotel room serves as a backdrop for a movie or photo shoot. But a play?

Welcome to Room 620 at the Hudson hotel. As noted previously, Green Eyes, a rarely seen one-act by Tennessee Williams, written in 1970 and published in 2008, is performed in this snug little suite through January 23. Fortunately for claustrophobic types, the play is short – just 35 minutes – with just two characters, a warring pair of newlyweds honeymooning in a seedy New Orleans hotel room. Read more
