The restaurant The best way to be wowed by Electric Lemon, a classic Rockwell Group creation perched on the 24th floor, is to start with a good look at the restaurant’s most striking feature: the bar. Think Park City-on-the-Hudson with acres of wood and glass, a sleek, gas-jet fireplace and inviting club chairs. Breakfast awaits in the dining room, a spacious feast of taupe punctuated by pale wood floors and buttery leather banquettes that’s serenely formulaic but delectably comfortable. Last year the Grand Hyatt New York, in the throes of a massive renovation, strung holiday lights from the construction scaffolding. This year the scaffolding is history, and a towering Christmas tree constructed from glass balls brings on the cheer.

A $130 million renovation is worth cheering – in part because it’s finished (the work unfolded in phases over three years). But the changes are smart, embracing nearly every inch of this midtown behemoth. “We’ve modernized,” said Mark Pardue, general manager, at a party celebrating the new building.
