The Carlyle’s Star Turn (Sort Of) In “Tár”

Ever since Week-End at the Waldorf, a remake of 1932’s Grand Hotel that danced across theater screens in 1945, New York City hotels have played silent but memorable supporting roles in dozens of movies. Some, like Godfather III (filmed at the Waldorf Astoria), Scent of a Woman (filmed at the Waldorf and the Plaza) and Quiz Show (filmed at The Roosevelt), have scooped up Academy Awards or nominations.

This year, one New York City hotel got an Oscar nod, sort of. Though Tár didn’t take home any of the six awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress, it did offer hotel buffs a glimpse of what appears to be Carlyle Hotel. Read more

The Merriest, Happiest Holiday Decorations at New York City Hotels, 2022 Edition

If we had choose just one word to describe the 2022 holiday season in New York City, we’d go with normal. And hey, after two years of pandemic craziness, normal sounds downright scintillating.

Lighting the way towards a blissful normalcy are the city’s hotels, dressed to dazzle whether you’re checking in — 6.5 million visitors were expected between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day — or just checking them out, as we do every year. Camera in hand, we captured 11 deliciously decked halls, walls, and even sidewalks at hotels all over Manhattan — and added the city’s showpiece outdoor tree just because.

The Happiest, Merriest Holiday Decorations at New York City Hotels, 2019 Edition

It’s cold outside. Dark, too. But an army of New York City hotels stands at the ready with an instant antidote to the gloom. Lights! Trees! Ornaments! Photo ops!

Whether it’s in response to the drumbeat of turbulent news or just a reflexive urge to be hospitable, the city’s hotels seem especially merry and bright this year. And that’s reason to cheer. With Wimbledon 2019 in the books, our tennis thoughts bounce to hard surfaces and the best hotels if you’re going to the U.S. Open.

The 50th annual U.S. Open unfurls from August 26 through September 8.

In theory, you can stay at any hotel in New York City and get yourself to the sprawling Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens (the easiest, and cheapest, way is to catch the 7 subway train at Grand Central Station for Mets-Willets Point Station). Was that the Tribeca Grand On View for a Blink in “Blue Jasmine?”

Yes, it was, and what a plum, if fleeting, cameo Tribeca’s chic brick, pie-slice-shaped hotel landed in Woody Allen’s latest movie.

Without giving too much away, a lead character – Alec Baldwin as a huckster bazillionaire named Hal – is spotted canoodling a glamorous brunette by his wife’s sister as the pair exit the hotel. After registering the look of shock on the sister’s face, the camera lingers for a few seconds on the hotel and its iconic clock with Roman numerals atop a sculpted wrought iron stand, a Tribeca landmark since the hotel opened in 2000. Another Unexpected Cameo for the Hotel Carter on “Smash”

The ratings may be tanking, but someone on the production end of Smash, NBC’s Broadway soap, has a wicked sense of humor.

The best keep guests entertained (and on the premises), attract additional visitors (who may migrate to the restaurant or bar) and impart a patina of prestige to the property, not to mention forking over rent.
